The Ripple Effect: Human Rights and the Quest for Ocean Health

22 October 2024

First Nations rights and governance in ocean and coastal protection

The “Ripple Effect: Human Rights and the Quest for Ocean Health” submission calls for stronger recognition of First Nations rights, knowledge and cultural responsibilities in ocean and coastal governance.

It advocates for Traditional Owner participation in decision-making, greater alignment with UNDRIP, recognition of Native Title rights, and the application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) where decisions affect Sea Country.

The submission emphasises that effective ocean protection must recognise the cultural, spiritual and legal relationships First Nations peoples hold with marine and coastal environments.
